I’d like us to look at the Rich Young Ruler in Mark 10:17–22.

The Bible says, The rich young ruler came running, fell on his knees, and asked Jesus:

Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”

Jesus pointed him to the commandments, and the young man replied that he had "kept them from his youth."

Then Scripture makes a striking statement, “Then Jesus beholding him loved him…,” and from a heart of love, Jesus said, “One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor… and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”

“And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.”

The faithfulness of the young ruler was not the issue.

His morality was not the issue.

His activity was not the issue.

But the Lord did not need the young ruler’s riches, religious acts, activity, or anything he had; Jesus wanted him.

What mattered was that He would do what Jesus said. And He asked for everything.

Now consider this: you are a leader, or “ruler,” in a way, in your ministry, of course.

You wouldn’t be considering discipleship if your dedication and desire to serve the Lord were not wonderful.

I’m sure your work and activity have been for the Lord, and you desire to serve Him.

And you have possessions or assets, like the rich young ruler, in the sense of…

•   Your ministry skills

•   The roles you’re most effective in

•   The ministries you enjoy the most

•   The parts of church life you enjoy

•   Your faithful weekly schedule

•   Your influence, your platform, your routine

•   The things in ministry that feel like yours

But to have effective discipleship in your life and ministry, the Lord Is the Lord asking for your favorite ministry, your strongest role, your most fulfilling schedule, all of it.

You may also have what I might call liabilities

•   expectations of your peer group

•   pressure from a fellowship, denomination, or network you belong to

•   a theological framework or ministry model you were trained in

•   ministries you are expected to keep to be considered biblical

To move forward to see the maximum multiplication, do you give all of this to the Lord? The assets and the liabilities?

Is the Lord asking for you to give Him the approval of the pastors you respect, the fellowship you depend on, or the system that trained you?

When disciple-makers are emerging in the church, doors open in places, cities, and countries you wouldn’t think possible, because when a Christian knows how to disciple one-on-one, God can use them anywhere in the world.

The Lord can lead you to plant churches from your ministry or help other churches that request your help to begin their discipleship ministry.

If you carefully follow the procedures in the Journey discipleship lessons, avoid shortcuts and leave nothing out, and remember that the purpose is to train disciple-makers, you can look forward to…

Winning more people to Christ

Caring for new and young Believers

Multiplying disciple-makers

Needing more outreach

Helping other churches start their one-on-one discipleship ministry

Training ministers in your own ministry

Sending missionaries to win, disciple, and plant churches

Planting churches from your church directly

In other words, you will have a first-century ministry.

Can you see it by faith?

Can you catch a vision of multiplication?

Can you see that even though you are a leader (ruler) you are also a disciple of the Lord’s?

Can you see that the greatest resource for your ministry is the people in the pew every Sunday?

So now, the most important thing is to do what the Lord said to do.

And I believe you can see He has it in writing what He wants, in His Word, that He wants multiplication.

Give your ministry to Him. Then follow Him.

The joy, peace, and impact of multiplying disciples is amazing.

So, if you are ready to get started and multiply in amazing ways, move on to How to Start Your One-on-One Discipleship Ministry at the link below, and never look back.

Do not wait until systems are smoother to start discipling intentionally.

Do not wait until the urgency in your life and ministry disappears, because it never will without disciplers to help you, encourage you, carry the burden, give you more time, more fellowship with God, and bear spiritual fruit.

Start now.
