Your
First Meeting and Meeting Every Week

Getting Started with your new disciple

You will discover that in one-on-one discipleship, there are two teachers and two learners at the same time. When we teach, we learn. When we disciple, we are also discipled.

Never assume your disciple is already a believer. Be ready to go over the Spiritual Map and confirm salvation. You need to hear their testimony—how they came to know the Lord as Savior.

From the beginning, clearly establish that God’s Word is the authority for this relationship.

How to Use Journey for One-on-One Discipleship

(a) At the start of each meeting, take a few minutes to connect through casual conversation. This builds fellowship and helps create a comfortable setting for learning.

(b) Next, the discipler should open in prayer before beginning the lesson.

(c) Then, review the disciple’s progress in their Daily in the Word writings. (This will be explained in more detail later.)

(d) After that, the discipler should read any introduction to the current topic.

(e) Next, the disciple reads the assigned Bible verses while the discipler reads the comments and helps with the blanks in the lesson. The discipler may also read the Bible verses if they prefer. Go line-by-line without skipping any content.

(f) Throughout the meeting, emphasize the importance of the Word of God.

(g) Encourage your disciple to ask questions. Questions often lead to deeper understanding and real spiritual growth.

If you are asked something you cannot answer, let your disciple know you will prepare an answer, or explain that the question will be addressed in a future lesson. Journey is designed for you to grow in God’s Word together.

(h) When it’s time to end the meeting, briefly summarize the main thoughts from the lesson.

(i) Then set your next meeting time to keep your discipleship consistent.

(j) Close by having the disciple pray.

(k) Finally, the discipler should record the meeting details in their records to track progress and maintain accountability.

Questions for your disciple

(This may not be needed for new believers.)

    •    When did you receive the Lord?

    •    How did you come to know the Lord?

    •    What were you like before you were saved?

    •    What were the circumstances around you getting saved?

    •    What changed in your life after you were saved?

    •    Where did you attend church before?

    •    Are you new to the Bible?

    •    Would you say you believe the Bible is God’s Word? Why?

    •    How did you come to this church?

    •    Please tell me, do you want to be discipled?

    •    Please tell me why you want to be discipled.

    •    Will you commit to meet together until you are discipled, and ready to win someone to Christ and disciple them?

Next, I will share when I received the Lord and how I became a discipler.

If the timing is right, we will both complete the discipleship questionnaire and exchange it, so we can get to know each other better.

We agree to meet together.

Now, let’s set a day and time to meet every week.

Meeting Every week with Your Disciple

Remember, one-on-one discipleship is one-to-one. Plan to meet with your disciple every week.

Men should meet only with men, and women only with women. Also, when possible, close family members should not disciple one another (though there may be exceptions in extreme situations).

Please do not use these discipleship lessons as Sunday school material, sermons, or for any other purpose. They are designed only for one-on-one discipleship.

If a new or young disciple leads someone to Christ before finishing one-on-one discipleship, they may begin discipling the new believer using Lessons One and Two of Journey. However, the disciple must still complete Journey and receive approval from church leadership before continuing discipleship beyond that.

Do not move to the next lesson if the disciple is not being obedient or if they do not fully understand the lesson.

All assignments are required.

As you disciple, aim to help your disciple get through the entire Bible.

Please inform church leadership about any unusual situations.

The way you begin a one-on-one discipleship relationship often determines how successful it will be.

Be excited, encouraging, and loving in all your words.

Disciple in such a way that you would feel confident letting your disciple disciple your own children when they are old enough.
